United Kingdom Map

For this work I used an energetic, flowing and romantic Maria Helena Hoksch’s Seastones script with its graceful oval forms that resemble sea stones polished by waves.

Loose gold leaves and malachite were used for the decorations.

Description

I travelled to the UK for the first time in 2019. It’s so hard to describe all the emotions I experienced when the plane landed in Gatwick Airport in London. Happiness and joy filled my heart, making my dream come true. London’s bridge as Fergie sings, red double-decker buses, cozy pubs, the Queen and monarchy, ever-changing British weather, the teatime and a million of other things.  It all was waiting for me there.

Some attractions that kept me captivated during my short-term stay in London.

The Changing of the Guard. Every day, regardless of the weather, this colourful marching takes place at 11:30am at St.Jame’s Palace.

The Tower Bridge or London Bridge rises 200 feet above the River Thames. It’s a magnificent structure with two towers.

In the National Gallery, situated at the edge of Trafalgar Square with the world’s finest collections, I saw “The scream” – the icon of modern art painted by the famous Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. It is a surprisingly simple work with just a few details becoming a symbol of modern existential crisis for everyone who at times feels lost, stressed, or threatened by unknown.

I walked the hallowed halls of Westminster Abbey where most English sovereigns were buried.

The London Eye (officially the Coca-Cola London Eye) gives you a wonderful chance to look at London from above. This 30 minutes journey to raise 443 feet above the Thames offers you spectacular views over the city.

In London I participated in the workshop “Seastones script” held by Maria Helena Hoksch. It was an amazing opportunity to learn from one of the best American calligraphers. This free-form script is delicate and romantic,  with open ovals that surround separate words or even sentences. At the same time, it is characterized by quite structured lowercase letters.

This work “United Kingdom Map” is an attempt in a funny way to convey all my emotions after my trip to London.
